INTRODUCTION

The macros in the Microsoft Word version 2.x for Windows templates may not run without error in Word 6.0 for Windows. The WD0264 disk included with this Application Note contains updated macros that correct this problem. If you encounter a WordBasic error when using the Word 2.x templates in Word 6.0, copy the updated macros from the enclosed WD0264 disk to your current template file using the Installation instructions below.

WARNING: ANY USE BY YOU OF THE CODE PROVIDED IN THIS ARTICLE IS AT YOUR OWN RISK. Microsoft provides this macro code "as is" without warranty of any kind, either express or implied, including but not limited to the implied warranties of merchantability and/or fitness for a particular purpose.

INSTALLATION

IMPORTANT: Before you copy the template files or install the letter template macros from the enclosed WD0264 disk, make backup copies of your existing templates.

  1. Make backup copies of all your template files (that is, .DOT files). For example, from the MS-DOS command prompt, type the following and press ENTER

          copy <source>\*.dot <destination>

where <source> is the location of your template files and <destination> is the location of your backup files. For example:

          copy c:\winword\template\*.dot c:\backup

  2. Insert the enclosed WD0264 disk in the appropriate disk drive and copy the following templates from the WD0264 disk to your current template directory.

NOTE: DO NOT copy the letter templates. See the "Letter Templates" section.

          ARTICLE2.DOT
          DISSERT2.DOT
          FAX.DOT
          MEMO2.DOT
          PRESS.DOT
          PROPOSAL.DOT
          REPLAND.DOT
          REPSIDE.DOT
          REPSTAND.DOT
          TERM2.DOT

For example, from the MS-DOS command prompt, type the following and press ENTER

          copy <drive>:\<template> <destination>

where <drive> is the floppy disk drive that contains the WD0264 disk, <template> is the filename of the template you want to copy, and <destination> is the location of your template directory. For example:

          copy a:\article2.dot c:\winword\template

Letter Templates

IMPORTANT: Before you begin this procedure, make backup copies of your existing Letter templates. See step 1 of the "Installation" section.

If you have stored names and addresses (glossary entries) in your Letter templates (LETBLOCK.DOT, LETPERSN.DOT, LETMDSEM.DOT, or LETMODBK.DOT), you must merge the new macros into your old templates in order to retain these glossary entries. If you simply copy the Letter templates from the WD0264 disk, your names and addresses will be lost.

NOTE: If you have NOT stored names and addresses in your Letter templates, you can simply copy the templates from the WD0264 disk to your existing template directory using the procedure in the "Installation" section above.

To merge the new macros, use the Organizer in Word 6.0 to copy the macros from the .DOT files included on the enclosed WD0264 disk to your existing Letter templates as described in the procedure below. For more information about the Organizer dialog box, see pages 218-219 and 752-753 in the "Microsoft Word User's Guide."

  1. From the File menu, choose Templates.

  2. Choose the Organizer button, and then select the Macros tab.

  3. Choose the left Close File button and then choose the left Open File button.

NOTE: When you choose the Close File button, it changes to the Open File button.

  4. From the List Files Of Type box, select Document Templates (*.dot).

  5. Insert the enclosed WD0264 disk in the appropriate floppy disk drive.

  6. In the Drives list, select the disk drive where you inserted the WD0264 disk. In the File Name box, select the template file you want to update (for example, LETBLOCK.DOT) and choose OK. The updated macros display in the left list box in the Organizer dialog box.

  7. Choose the right Close File button (if it is available) and then choose the right Open File button.

NOTE: The right Close File button changes to the right Open File button if you have no documents open in Word or if you previously chose the right Close File button.

  8. In the List Files Of Type box, select Document Templates (*.dot).

  9. Select your current (Word 2.x) template file that contains the WordBasic macros you want to replace with the updated version on the WD0264 disk (for example, LETBLOCK.DOT in the WINWORD\TEMPLATES subdirectory on drive C) and choose OK.

  10. Select all the macros in the list on the left side of the Organizer dialog box. To do this, select the first macro in the list, press and hold down the SHIFT key, then select the last macro in the list so the entire list is selected.

  11. Choose the Copy button. When Word displays the "Do you wish to overwrite the existing macro <MacroName>?" prompt, choose the Yes or Yes To All button. This replaces the old macros (the ones that were producing WordBasic errors) in your existing template with new macros from the updated .DOT file on the WD0264 disk.

  12. Choose the Close button. When Word prompts you to save changes to your template, choose Yes. When Word displays the following message, choose Yes.

The file FILENAME.DOT is a Word version 2.0 for Windows document. Do you want to overwrite it with Word version 6.0 for Windows format?
