Pictures Larger Than 8.5" Get Scaled When Exiting Picture Edit

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a

SYMPTOMS

In Word 6.0 for Windows, if you create a picture wider then 8.5 inches (such as a landscape award with the Award Wizard) and then double-click the picture to load it into the Picture Editor, when you exit the Picture Editor, the Picture will be scaled to 8.5-inches wide.

CAUSE

Word Picture objects always come up with the default page size, which is usually 8.5-by-11 inches, regardless of the size settings of the document the picture is edited in. This means any picture wider than 8.5 inches will be trimmed or scaled down when edited in Word.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word versions 6.0 and 6.0a for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUNDS

Method 1: If you previously had Word 2.0 for Windows installed on your

system, set Microsoft Draw as the default picture editor BEFORE
you double- click to edit the picture. Microsoft Draw supports
22-inch page size and will not distort the picture. (NOTE:
Microsoft Draw will only be available if you previously had Word
          2.0 for Windows installed.)

For more information about setting the default editing
application, see page 365 of the "Microsoft Word User's Guide."

Method 2: Once you exit the Picture Editor, select the picture and resize
it by choosing Picture from the Format menu.

Method 3: Before you edit the picture, note the original size so you can
"reset" the size after editing. (To determine the original size,
choose Picture from the Format menu, and note the Width and
          Height settings under Size.)
