The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a

SYMPTOMS

In a document with variable-width columns, the text may appear to wrap incorrectly. Word for Windows wraps the text at the width of the printable page, divided by the number of columns.

For example, in a two-column document on a 6-inch-wide page, Word wraps all lines at 3 inches, even if the column widths are 2 and 4 inches.

CAUSE

Word wraps variable-width columns as if they were equal-width columns when you are in normal view. Normal view is an editing view, so Word does not display all aspects of your document as they will print (WYSIWYG).

RESOLUTION

To view your variable-width columns with the text wrapped as it will print, switch to page layout view (choose Page Layout from the View menu).
