WD: Indent Formatting Removed After Only One Paragraph

Last reviewed: February 5, 1998
Article ID: Q113736
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you format a paragraph to have a first line indent of any number greater than 0 (zero), or if you change a style to have this formatting, the first line formatting is not retained when you start a second paragraph.

Similarly, if you set a left or right paragraph indent, Word retains the indent formatting for one paragraph only; Word removes the indent formatting for the next paragraph.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if Help For WordPerfect Users is selected.

RESOLUTION

Turn off WordPerfect Help with one of the following methods.

Method 1: a. From the Tools menu, choose Options.

          b. Select the General tab.
          c. Clear the Help For WordPerfect Users check box.

Method 2: a. On the status bar, double-click the letters WPH.
          b. Choose the Options button.
          c. Clear the Help For WordPerfect Users check box.

Method 3: Word 6.x and 7.x: When installing Word, choose No to the prompt
to install help for users of WordPerfect.

MORE INFORMATION

The only formatting lost by selecting this WordPerfect option is Paragraph/Indents (that is, left and right indents and special). Any other formatting is retained correctly.
