The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0

SYMPTOMS

In a multiple-section document that contains one or more sections that are protected for forms, Word for Windows protects the last section if it is empty and you then insert an INCLUDETEXT field.

CAUSE

Whenever you insert an INCLUDETEXT field as the only item in the last, unprotected section of your document, Word applies the section formatting (in this case, protection for forms) for the current section to the INCLUDETEXT field results.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word versions 6.0 and 6.0a for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

Use the Unprotect command on the Tools menu to unprotect your document for forms. Then re-protect sections of your document by choosing Protect Document from the Tools menu, selecting the Forms option, choosing the Sections button, and clearing the check boxes for the sections you want unprotected.

Use one of the following methods to avoid this problem altogether:

Method 1: Type something (for example, a space or a paragraph mark)

anywhere in the last section before you insert the INCLUDETEXT
          field.

Method 2: Create a new document, insert the INCLUDETEXT field, then copy
and paste the field into the protected document.

Method 3: Create an AutoText entry that consists of the INCLUDETEXT field
and then insert the field using the AutoText entry.
