Last reviewed: February 18, 1998
Article ID: Q114005
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1
  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

The AutoSave feature (AutoRecover in Word 97 for Windows and Word 98 Macintosh Edition) does not work in master documents.

CAUSE

By design, Word does not recover master documents automactically because the AutoSave (AutoRecover) file format is not compatible with the master document file format.

WORKAROUND

Turn on the Always Create Backup Copy option. With this option, Word saves the previous version of the document as a backup copy every time you save the document.

To locate the Always Create Backup Copy option, click Options (Preferences on the Macintosh) on the Tools menu and select the Save tab.)

NOTE: This workaround does not automatically save your master document, so you should save your document frequently.
