Word Inserts an Opening Smart Quote After a Space

SUMMARY

In Word 6.0 and 6.0a for Windows, the Smart Quotes feature will always insert an opening quotation mark immediately after a space. This feature is by design.

To modify the Word for Windows Smart Quotes feature:

   1. From the Tools menu, choose AutoCorrect.

   2. Select or clear the "Change Straight Quotes to Smart Quotes" check
      box and choose OK.

To enable or disable the Smart Quotes feature for AutoFormatting:

   1. From the Tools menu, choose Options.

   2. Select the AutoFormat tab.

   3. Under Replace, select or clear the "Straight Quotes with Smart
      Quotes" check box and choose OK.

MORE INFORMATION

To force a closing Smart Quote immediately after a space use a "hard space." To insert a hard space, press CTRL+SHIFT+SPACE.
