The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a
  • Microsoft Windows operating system version 3.1

SYMPTOMS

The following WordBasic command

   ToolsOptionsSpelling .Type=<n>

will produce the "Command Failed" Error when "n" = 2, 3, or 4.

CAUSE

By design, Word allows you to specify 1 of 5 types of predefined dictionaries. Word will generate a Command Failed error when the specified dictionary is not installed.

The 5 types are as follows:

     0 Normal
     1 Concise
     2 Complete
     3 Medical
     4 Legal

RESOLUTION

If you are using Word's default dictionary, specify 0 (zero) for the type argument.

If you are using a supplemental dictionary, confirm that the Type corresponds to the type of dictionary you are using.
