The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a

SYMPTOMS

Document protection fails to protect the index entry section when the section immediately following the index section is excluded from protection. (To locate this option, from the Tools menu, choose Protect Document and choose Forms. Choose the Sections button to check or uncheck protection for specific sections.)

CAUSE

When you insert an index, Word inserts a continuous section break above and below the index. When you exclude the section immediately following the index, you also exclude the index. This behavior is by design.

RESOLUTION

Insert a continuous section break immediately following the end of section break below the Index. You will be able to unprotect this new section without unprotecting the index.
