WD: Drag and Drop Disabled with Modeless Dialog Box Active

Last reviewed: February 5, 1998
Article ID: Q118480
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

Drag-and-drop editing is disabled when a modeless dialog box is on the screen. The mouse pointer changes to a circle with a slash through it if you attempt to drag and drop while the modeless dialog box is open.

(NOTE: "Modeless" means that while the dialog is on the screen, you can click in the text area and continue editing.)

STATUS

We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

Close the modeless dialog box before performing drag-and-drop editing.

MORE INFORMATION

One of the enhancements to Word 6.0 for Windows is that many of the dialog boxes are modeless. Examples of these dialog boxes are the Edit Find, Edit Goto, and Spelling dialog boxes.

If a modeless dialog box is on the screen, then drag-and-drop editing is not allowed. To indicate that the feature is temporarily unavailable, the mouse pointer arrow changes to a circle with a slash through the middle when you attempt a drag-and-drop action. As soon as the dialog box is closed, drag-and-drop editing is available again.
