WD: Cannot Convert Microsoft Excel Worksheet Object to Chart

Last reviewed: February 6, 1998
Article ID: Q120773
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

In Word for Windows, when you try to convert an embedded Microsoft Excel worksheet object to a Microsoft Excel chart, the worksheet is not actually converted.

CAUSE

"Microsoft Excel Chart," which appears as an option in the Convert dialog box, is not a valid choice. [To locate this conversion option, select the Microsoft Excel worksheet object, click Worksheet Object (Spreadsheet Object in Word 6.0) on the Edit menu, and then click Convert.]

Choosing to convert the Microsoft Excel worksheet object results in an incorrect representation of your worksheet and causes the EMBED field code to be modified, as shown in the following examples:

   Original field code:           {EMBED Excel.Sheet.5}

   After converting to Chart:     {EMBED Excel.Chart.5 \s}

The "Microsoft Excel Chart" option appears when the object has been embedded, not linked.

In Word 97, you cannot view the field codes of an object that has the Float Over Text property turned on. (To remove the Float Over Text property, right-click the object, select Format Object, select the Position tab, clear the Float Over Text check box, and click OK.)

WORKAROUNDS

Method 1: On the Insert menu, click Object and create a new Microsoft

          Excel chart object.

Method 2: Instead of choosing Paste to insert the object, choose Paste
          Special and then click Paste Link.
