SYMPTOMSWhen a table includes both shading and borders, you may experience one of the following behaviors:
Case 1When you apply shading to a cell below a cell that has a border, the bottom border will disappear. This behavior occurs when you apply shading using the Borders toolbar. Note that this behavior does not occur when you use the Borders And Shading command on the Format menu.
Case 2When you apply different percentages of shading to your table rows and a grid border to the table, and then perform a sort on the table, the border may disappear. This behavior occurs when you apply the borders and shading by using either the Borders And Shading command or the Borders toolbar. This behavior does not occur when all rows have the same percentage of shading.
WORKAROUNDSTo work around this problem, follow the appropriate method for your situation.

STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Word listed at the beginning of this article. This problem has been corrected in Word 97 for Windows and Word 98 Macintosh Edition.
