SYMPTOMS

If you use the instructions in the "Settings Files from Word for the Macintosh" section on page 219 of "Microsoft Word User's Guide" (Word for the Macintosh edition, part number WB60460-0794) to convert your Word 5.1 settings file, Word for the Macintosh incorrectly reassigns the SHIFT+RETURN. When you press SHIFT+RETURN after merging your Word 5.1 settings file, Word inserts a page break instead of a line break. In other words, Word assigns SHIFT+ENTER functionality to the SHIFT+RETURN key combination.

NOTE: The Word 5.1 settings file contains custom settings, such as keyboard shortcuts, styles, command keys, and custom menu items.

Furthermore, after you convert your Word 5.1 settings file, you cannot reset the SHIFT+RETURN key combination by choosing Customize from the Tools menu and selecting the Keyboard tab. This means you cannot easily transfer your Word 5.1 settings to Word 6.0.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word version 6.0 for the Macintosh. This problem was corrected in Word version 6.0.1 for the Macintosh.

WORKAROUND

You must quit Word and delete or rename your Normal template to reset these incorrect keyboard assignments. Then, restart Word and customize the keyboard settings individually using the Customize command on the Tools menu.

The disadvantage of this workaround is that by deleting your Normal template, you also delete any custom macros, toolbars, or commands stored in that template. If your Normal template contains many custom items, you can rename the template and then, after you create a new Normal template, use the Organizer dialog box to copy these items from your old Normal template to the new one. (To open the Organizer dialog box, choose Templates from the File menu and then choose the Organizer button.)
