WD: Incomplete Top Paragraph Border Below Indented Paragraph

Last reviewed: February 5, 1998
Article ID: Q122506
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 6.0
  • Microsoft Word for Windows NT, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

When you apply a box border to two or more paragraphs where the first paragraph has a left and right indent and the second paragraph has no indent, the top border over the second paragraph is not displayed or printed correctly. The indented paragraph has a box border around it. Multiple paragraphs with the same indentation do not exhibit this behavior.

WORKAROUND

Apply a border between the two paragraphs to complete the incomplete top border and remove the bottom border from the indented paragraph to prevent a double border. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Select the paragraph with the incomplete border.

  2. On the Format menu, click Borders And Shading.

  3. In the Border box, apply a border between the sample paragraphs.

  4. Click OK.

  5. Select the indented paragraph.

  6. On the Format menu, click Borders And Shading.

  7. Remove the bottom border by clicking the bottom border of the sample paragraphs in the Border box.

  8. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Word for Windows listed above. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
