WD: GP Fault in GRAM.DLL When Grammar Checking

Last reviewed: February 5, 1998
Article ID: Q122944
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.1a
  • Microsoft Word for Windows NT, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

When you perform a grammar check in Word, you may get a general protection (GP) fault in the Gram.dll module. For example, the following sentence in Word for Windows

I am responsible for the schedule and feature set of my product
and guide its entire development process from the initiation phase
   through product release.

results in the following error message:

WINWORD caused a General Protection Fault in module GRAM.DLL
   at 0053:0CDD.

If you grammar check the above sentence using Word for the Macintosh or Word for Windows NT, you will not receive the error; instead, you will receive an incorrect suggestion in the Suggestion box.

CAUSE

The Subject-Verb Agreement option is activated. (To locate this option, choose Options from the Tools menu, select the Grammar tab, choose the Customize Settings button, choose the Grammar option, and in the list below the Grammar option you'll see the "Subject-Verb Agreement" option.)

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft Word.

To work around this problem, either rewrite the sentence to prevent the error, or clear the Subject-Verb Agreement option by following these steps:

  1. From the Tools menu, choose Options.

  2. Select the Grammar tab.

  3. Choose the Customize Settings button.

  4. Choose the Grammar option.

  5. In the list below the Grammar option, click to clear the Subject-Verb Agreement check box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Word version 7.0 for Windows 95.
