WD6: "Word Cannot Open..." When Opening Multiple HTML Documents

Last reviewed: February 5, 1998
Article ID: Q128691
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Assistant for Word, version 1.0
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0a, 6.0c

SYMPTOMS

You receive the following error message when attempting to open multiple HTML documents:

   Microsoft Word Err=1025
Word cannot open the document: <path>\<filename>

In some cases, Word may open one or more of those documents, but they appear empty; or Word may open the first document but none of the other selected documents.

This error message is misleading because it is typically displayed when you try to open a damaged document or one that Word cannot recognize or convert. Your document may, in fact, not be damaged.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Internet Assistant for Word, version 1.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

RESOLUTION

Open the HTML documents individually.

If any documents open but do not display their contents, close them and reopen them one at a time.
