Error "Unable to Open Specified Library" starting NT Word

Last reviewed: February 5, 1998

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows NT version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

The error "Unable to Open Specified Library" occurs when you start Word for Windows NT if either of the following is true:

  • Word for Windows NT is installed on top of 16-bit Word for Windows running Bookshelf '94.
  • Bookshelf '94 is installed with Word for Windows NT, and the Word Integration option is enabled.

CAUSE

The error is caused by a function in the AutoExec macro calling the KERNEL.EXE library. Because Windows NT is a 32-bit operating system, the name of the kernel has been changed. The AutoExec macro is used to display the "Quote of the Day."

Bookshelf '94 uses a 16-bit DLL for the Word integration. If you are running 16-bit Word for Windows under Windows NT, the integration works correctly because the 16-bit DLL is interacting with 16-bit Word. If you are running 32-bit Word for Windows NT, the 16-bit integration DLL will not work correctly with the 32-bit application.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem, and we will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUNDS

Disable Bookshelf's integration with Word and use the two programs separately. Turn off integration by using either of the following methods:

Method 1: Move BSHELF94.DOT out of the <WINWORD>\STARTUP directory. If the

wab macros have been copied to NORMAL.DOT, you must also delete
or rename the AutoExec macro in NORMAL.DOT.

Method 2: Remove the Word Integration feature by following these steps:

          1. Run Bookshelf '94 Setup.

          2. Choose Add/Remove.

          3. Clear the Integration With Microsoft Word check box.

          4. Choose Continue. Setup will remove the integration feature.
