SYMPTOMS

When you select the "Use Tab and Backspace Keys to Set Left Indent" check box (click Options on the Tools menu and click the Edit tab), and then press the TAB key to set the left indent for a paragraph, Word fails to set the left indent. Instead, Word inserts a tab character.

CAUSE

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, first type the paragraph, move the insertion point to the beginning of the paragraph, and then press the TAB key.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for Windows 95 versions 7.0 and 7.0a and Word 97 for Windows. Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
