WD: Word Is Hidden Behind Taskbar

Last reviewed: February 5, 1998
Article ID: Q138730
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you open Word as a normal window (not maximized and not minimized, but showing some of the desktop behind it), the window is partially hidden by the taskbar or Office Shortcut Bar.

CAUSE

This happens when the taskbar or Office Shortcut Bar is configured with the following settings:

  • Always On Top is selected.

    -and-

  • Auto Hide is not selected.

    -and-

  • The taskbar is located at the top or left side of the screen.

WORKAROUNDS

Method 1: Click the Start Bar or Office Shortcut Bar with the right

mouse button, click Properties, and clear the Always On Top
          check box.

Method 2: Click the Start Bar or Office Shortcut Bar with the right
mouse button, click Properties, and select Auto Hide.

Method 3: Move the taskbar or Office Shortcut Bar to the right side of
the screen or to the bottom of the screen.

Method 4: Run Word in a maximized window.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Word listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

Each time you open Word in the normal window mode, less of the window will be visible. Therefore, at some point you may not be able to see the window at all. If this happens, you can reposition the window with one of the following methods:

Method 1: Press ALT+SPACEBAR to access the Control menu, and click

Move. Then, use the arrow keys on the keyboard to center the
window on the screen, or press any key to activate the Move
function with the mouse and use the mouse to center the
          window.

Method 2: Close Word by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL, selecting Word, and
choosing End Task. With the right mouse button, click the
Word icon on the Office Shortcut Bar, click Properties, click
the Shortcut tab, and click Maximized in the Run list.
