The information in this article applies to:
SYMPTOMSWhen you send a password-protected document as an attachment from Word using the Send command on the File menu, the recipient is not prompted for a password when opening the file from the mail message.
CAUSEWhen Word sends a document, it does not retain all the document properties.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Word versions listed above. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows and Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition.
RESOLUTIONTo resolve this problem, upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft Word. To work around this problem, use either of the following methods.
Method 1 (Word 6.x and 7.x)To retain password protection, attach password-protected documents from within your mail program instead of sending them from Word.
Method 2 (Word 6.x for Windows Only)Microsoft provides programming examples for illustration only, without warranty either expressed or implied, including, but not limited to, the implied warranties of merchantability and/or fitness for a particular purpose.
