Word 5.1: Out of Memory Error When You Switch to Outline View

SYMPTOMS

When you switch to outline view, you may receive the following error message:

   Low on memory. Close windows and save your document.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you attempt to view a large document in outline view. Outline view is limited to 10,919 paragraphs. This is a limitation of Word 5.1. This limitation has been removed in Word 6.0.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, divide your document into smaller documents that do not contain more than 10,919 paragraphs.
