WD: Auto Spell Checker Reflags Words After Using Ignore All

Last reviewed: February 5, 1998
Article ID: Q140437
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

The Automatic Spell Checking feature may reflag one or more words as misspelled even though you chose Ignore All during a previous spell checking session. This behavior occurs when you open your document in a new session of Word and add new text to the document. Most frequently, Word reflags:

  • The word that appears immediately before any new text.
  • The second word after any new text.

(To locate the Automatic Spell Checking option, click Options on the Tools menu, and click the Spelling tab.)

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word versions 7.0 and 7.0a for Windows 95 and Word 97 for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

To avoid rechecking these words, use one of the following workarounds:

Method 1: Add the word to a custom dictionary.

Method 2: Insert a paragraph mark between the word and the new text.

Method 3: Format the text for No Proofing.
