The information in this article applies to:
SYMPTOMSYour text-only document contains the letter "Y" with an umlaut accent, or it contains a hollow rectangle character in place of heading numbering. A side-effect of this is that WordMail messages that contain these characters may be truncated when WordMail translates these characters as end-of-file markers.
CAUSEYou saved a Word document that contains Heading Numbering in the Text Only format. The problem occurs when you select any of the following predefined Heading Numbering formats (Format menu):
1 1. 1.1 1.1. 1.1.1 1.1.1.The problem also occurs when you select any of the following technical or legal predefined formats in the Bullets And Numbering dialog box (Format menu) on the Multilevel tab:
1. 1 1. 1.1. 1.1 1.1. 1.1.1. 1.1.1 1.1.1. STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem has been corrected in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows.
