WD: Purpose of Square Bullets Displayed in Left Margin

SYMPTOMS

Nonprinting square bullets are displayed in the left margin area of a document when you view the document in page layout or in normal view.

CAUSE

These squares indicate that one or more of the following paragraph formatting is applied to the text:

   Keep Lines Together
   Keep With Next
   Page Break Before
   Suppress Line Numbers

Square bullets also appear in the left margin area where a frame has been inserted. These bullets appear in normal view only.

You can see the square, nonprinting square in either normal or page layout view. To see the square use the following steps:

  • Click the Show/Hide paragraph button on the Standard toolbar

  1. On the Tools menu, Options. (In Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition, click Preferences.)

  2. Under Nonprinting Characters, click Paragraph Marks

  3. Click OK.
