Last reviewed: November 17, 1997
Article ID: Q142086
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.1a

SYMPTOMS

When you apply Page Break Before formatting (click the "Line and Page Breaks" tab in the Paragraph dialog box) to a list item in a multilevel list, the items in the list may be numbered incorrectly.

WORKAROUND

Instead of using paragraph formatting to insert the page break, insert a page break by clicking Break on the Insert menu.

STATUS

This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows.

MORE INFORMATION

If you apply Page Break Before formatting to a paragraph that is a numbered level in a list, items that are listed under the next item in the same level may be numbered incorrectly.

For example, if you apply Page Break Before formatting to item B in the following list

   1. TEXT
      A. Text
         1. text
         2. text
         3. text
         4. text
      B. Text
         1. text
         2. text
         3. text

the list is renumbered as follows:

   1. TEXT
      A. Text
         1. text
         2. text
         3. text
         4. text
   <page break>
      B. Text
         5. text
         6. text
         7. Text

NOTE: The list is renumber differently depending on the placement of the Page Break Before formatting. For example, you may find that a level number is repeated before the sequence continues.
