SYMPTOMSWhen you create a table of contents for a document in Word 7.0 that was originally created in Word 6.0, some entries are missing from the table of contents. Only those heading styles with actual heading numbering levels assigned appear in the table of contents. Those paragraphs formatted with heading styles that don't have automatic numbering are omitted from the table of contents.
CAUSEWord 7.0 incorrectly converts Heading Numbering in Word 6.0 documents. This does not happen with documents created in Word 7.0.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the products listed at the beginning of this article. Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
WORKAROUNDOpen the Word 6.0 document in Word 7.0 and remove and reapply heading numbering. Use the following steps to do this:
