The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Windows for Workgroups operating system, version 3.11

SYMPTOMS

If you are using Microsoft At Work PC Fax, and you use the Standard Image Quality option to fax a Word document, you receive one of the following results:

  • The text extends into the right margin of the page.
  • The height of graphics, such as drawing objects or clip art, expands while the width remains the same.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if either of the following conditions is true:

  • You are using Standard Image Quality, which sends the fax at 100 dpi resolution. Although this option allows for faster transmission of the fax, the quality of the fax is reduced.

    -or-

  • A setting in the Win.ini is incorrect. For example, the following settings, which are added to the Win.ini when you change the resolution settings in Printers control panel, are incorrect:

          [Microsoft At Work Fax,Fax]
          Print Quality=300
          Y Resolution=300

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use any of the following methods.

Method 1: Change the Image Quality setting to Best Available. This option

sends the fax at 300 dpi, the highest resolution available on
computer-to-computer faxes. To do this, use the following steps:

          a. Start Mail.

          b. Click Options on the Fax menu.

          c. Click Image Quality, select the Best Available option, and
             click OK.

Method 2. Edit the Win.ini using a text editor, such as Notepad, locate the
[Microsoft At Work Fax,Fax] section and disable (comment) all
lines in this section by typing a semi-colon (;) before each
          line.
