SUMMARY
This article describes how to print envelopes to the Apple Portable
StyleWriter, from both the Envelopes And Labels dialog box (Tools menu) and
from the Mail Merge feature in Word.

Printing Envelopes from the Envelopes Dialog Box
To print envelopes from the Envelopes dialog box, follow these steps:
- Stand the printer up and open the top cover. Make sure the paper
thickness adjustment dial is set to the envelope icon. (Refer to page
19 of the Portable StyleWriter User's Guide for more information.)
- Insert an envelope, top first and face up, into the slot in the back of
the printer. (Push the envelope approximately 1/2 inch into the printer
until it stops.)
- Press the LF/FF button three times to properly align the envelope.
- Press the On Line button.
The On Line light goes on. The printer is ready to print.
- In Word, click Envelopes and Labels on the Tools menu, and select the
Envelope tab.
- Type the Delivery and Return Addresses.
- Click the Options button.
- Select the Printing Options tab.
- Select the Center Portrait icon for the Feed Method (second from the
left). Also make sure that Face Up and Clockwise Rotation are selected.
Click OK.
- Select the Envelope Options tab and select the envelope size (Size 10).
If desired, add bar codes and change the font of the return and/or
destination addresses. Click OK.
- Click the Print button.
- In the Print dialog box, select Quality (Best or Faster) and select
Manual feed. Click the Print button. Click OK when the following
message is displayed:
Please insert a sheet of paper and ensure that the printer is
"on line". Click OK to continue, Cancel to terminate printing.
The envelope should print correctly.
To Print Envelopes Using Mail Merge
To print envelopes using mail merge, follow these steps:
- On the Tools menu, click Mail Merge.
- In the Mail Merge Helper dialog box, under Step 1: Main Document,
choose Create Envelopes. Select Active Window or New Main Document.
- Under Step 2: Data Source, choose Create Data Source. If your data file
has already been created, select Get Data, and then select Open Data
Source from the list that appears. Select your data file in the Open
dialog box and click Open.
NOTE: Skip steps 4, 5 and 10 if you opened an existing data file in
Step 3.
- Choose the desired fields (i.e. Title, First Name, Last Name, Address,
and so forth) and select OK.
- Give the data source (data document) a name in the Save Current
Document As dialog box, and save the document.
- In the next dialog box, click the Set Up Main Document button, which
will open the Envelope Options dialog box.
- Click the Envelope Options tab and select the envelope size (Size 10).
- Click the Printing Options tab and select the Center Portrait icon for
the Feed Method (second from the left). Also make sure that Face Up
and Clockwise Rotation are selected. Click OK.
- In the Envelope Address dialog box, insert the merge fields for the
destination address. Choose the Insert Postal Bar Code button if you
want to add a postal bar code or an FIM-A courtesy reply mail bar code
to your envelopes. Click OK.
- In the Mail Merge Helper dialog box, under Step 2: Data Source, select
Edit Data: <<document name>> and enter your data in the data form.
Click OK.
- The Main Document is now set up properly to print envelopes and be
merged with the Data Source (data file). Click the Merge to Printer
button on the Mail Merge toolbar. Or, if you are still in the Mail
Merge Helper dialog box, click the Merge button under Step 3: Merge the
Data with the Document, select Merge to Printer, and click Merge.
NOTE: You may merge to a new document first to check for errors before
printing, then simply print the resulting Envelope document.
- Stand the printer up and open the top cover. Make sure the paper
thickness adjustment dial is set to the envelope icon. (Refer to page
19 of the Portable StyleWriter User's Guide for more information.)
- In the Print dialog box, select Quality (Best or Faster) and select
Manual feed. Click the Print button. The following message displays:
Please insert a sheet of paper and ensure that the printer is
"on line". Click OK to continue, Cancel to terminate printing.
Before you click OK to continue, do the following:
a. Insert an envelope, top first and face up, into the slot in the back
of the printer. (Push the envelope approximately 1/2 inch into the
printer until it stops.)
b. Press the LF/FF three times to properly align the envelope.
c. Press the On Line button. The On Line light goes on. The printer is
ready to print.
The first envelope should print correctly.
- Repeat steps 13a through 13c until the mail merge is complete.
