SYMPTOMS

When you start Word, you may receive a general protection (GP) fault error in WINWORD.EXE.

CAUSE

This problem occurs with some versions of the Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet 4 and 5 printer drivers. Errors will also occur if the printer driver becomes damaged or corrupted or if you are using a printer driver intended for a different operating system than the one you are actually using.

RESOLUTION

Remove and reinstall your printer driver.

-or-

Install an updated version of your printer driver.

MORE INFORMATION

A quick test to determine if the printer driver is the cause of the error is to set another printer as your default printer before you start Word. The following drivers are compatible with the LaserJet 4 and 5 series of printers:

   HP LaserJet II/III family drivers
   HP DeskJet 500 family drivers
