  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.1a
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

Some footnotes or endnotes are not available for selection in the Cross- reference dialog box. For example, you may see the first and third footnote, but not the second footnote.

CAUSE

You inserted a hard carriage return after the footnote or endnote text reference number and then you typed your footer or endnote.

For example, if the second footnote is not available in the Cross-reference dialog box, you inserted a paragraph mark before the text of the footnote or endnote in the footnote or endnote window pane or viewing area.

WORKAROUND

Remove the hard carriage return before the footnote or endnote text reference mark. If you need extra line spacing in the footnotes or endnotes, use any of the following methods.

Method 1

Modify the Footnote or Endnote Text style to include space before or after the paragraph.

Method 2

Add the hard carriage return when you type the footnote text, by pressing ENTER at the end of your footnote text.

Method 3

Position the insertion point after the text of the previous footnote or endnote and then press ENTER.
