WD97: Can't Save Version for Read-Only Document

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to save a version of a read-only document, you get the following error message:

   This file is read-only <filename>.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, first save the read-only file to another file. Using the new file, you can save one or more versions of the document.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
