| The information in this article applies to: 
 
 SYMPTOMSWhen you insert a CMYK or a Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) formatted graphic into a Word document, the graphic may be displayed as a box with an X inside it or you may receive one of the following error messages: 
 CAUSEMicrosoft Word, versions 7.x and 97, cannot convert CMYK JPEG graphics. 
 WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, use either of the following methods: Method 1: Use a different JPEG format, such as grayscale or RGB. Method 2: Use another graphic format that Word supports, such as image file format (TIFF), Encapsulated PostScript (EPS),CGM, BMP, or WMF. 
 STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed above. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
