SYMPTOMSWhen you attempt to split table cells horizontally, you receive the following error message:
Word could not split the selection containing a merged cell. CAUSEThe selection contains one or more cells that have been merged vertically.
WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, use either of the following methods:
Method 1: Split table cells separately
Method 2: Increase selection to include entire rangeSelect all table rows that contain cells that have been vertically merged, and then split the cells.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the products listed at the beginning of this article. Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
