WD97: Can't Make First Letter of Sentence a Capital Letter

SYMPTOMS

Word will not automatically capitalize the first sentence of a paragraph, even when the "Capitalize first letter of sentences" option is selected.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the paragraph follows a form field or hyperlink.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, manually capitalize the first letter of the paragraph with the SHIFT key.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Microsoft Word will capitalize the first letter of the first word in a sentence if the "Capitalize first letter of sentences" option is selected.

To select the "Capitalize first letter of sentences" option, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect.

  2. On the AutoCorrect tab, click to select the "Capitalize first letter of sentences" check box, and then click OK.
