IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, you should first make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat). Both are hidden files in the Windows folder.
SUMMARYMicrosoft will periodically provide updated versions of the Web page authoring tools to keep up with changing technology. These tools can either be updated automatically by Word, or you can manually request Word to check for and download the latest version of the tools. NOTE: After Word checks to see if you need to update your files, it sets a date in the AutoUpdate registry setting that it uses to perform the next AutoUpdate. The date will be reset to one month after the current AutoUpdate.

To Update AutomaticallyIf you have access to the World Wide Web, Word will periodically check to see if a newer version of the Web authoring tools is available on the Microsoft Web site. If a newer version is found, a message appears notifying you that a newer version is available. You can choose to download and install the latest version.
To Update ManuallyIf you have a dial-up connection to the World Wide Web, use the AutoUpdate command on the Tools menu to manually check for the latest version:

To Turn Off AutoUpdateWARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows 95. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. For information about how to edit the registry, view the Changing Keys And Values online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). Note that you should make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat) before you edit the registry.
