WD97: Send To PowerPoint Fails

Last reviewed: July 31, 1997
Article ID: Q164687
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you use the "Send To:" feature in Word to send a Word file to PowerPoint, you may receive the following error message:

   C:\<windows>\Temp\~present.rtf

Sorry, this type of file cannot be opened by PowerPoint Viewer.

CAUSE

You installed the Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer for Windows 95.

This installation caused the PowerPoint Viewer to register itself as the PowerPoint Server, replacing PowerPoint 97 as the PowerPoint server.

RESOLUTION

PowerPoint 97 has to be re-registered as the PowerPoint Server. To register PowerPoint 97 again, use the following steps:

  1. Quit all open Office programs.

  2. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.

  3. On the Open line, type "powerpnt /regserver" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK.

NOTE: PowerPoint 97 will briefly start up and then quit. This forces PowerPoint 97 to register itself as the PowerPoint server. You will now be able to use the "Send To" feature from Word 97 to send a Word document to PowerPoint 97, and you will still be able to use the PowerPoint Viewer for Windows 95 to view your older PowerPoint files. The viewer will not view PowerPoint 97 files.
