IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, you should first make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat). Both are hidden files in the Windows folder.
SYMPTOMSWhen you open a JPEG file in Photo Editor, one of the following error messages may appear:
CAUSEThis error occurs when the Windows 95 registry is pointing to the wrong setting for the location of the Jpegimp32.flt graphic converter that is needed by Microsoft Photo Editor. When you install both the Windows 95 Plus Package and Office 97, you will have two different Jpegim32.flt graphics converter files in two different locations on your computer. The Windows 95 Plus program installs this file into the C:\Windows \MSAPPS\GRPHFLT folder with a size of 26 KB, while the Office 97 program installs the file into the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Grphflt folder with a size of 168 KB. The Microsoft Photo Editor needs to use the Jpegim32.flt file installed from the Office 97 installation within the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Grphflt folder rather than the one from the Windows 95 Plus package.
RESOLUTION
For information about how to edit the registry, view the Changing Keys And Values online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). Note that you should make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat) before you edit the registry. WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows 95. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
MORE INFORMATIONThe Microsoft Photo Editor is a standalone product that is installed by a complete install of Office 97. It allows you to customize graphic images you create, scan, or open. For additional information, please see the following articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
