WD: Unable to Fax Multiple Copies of Word Document

Last reviewed: July 31, 1997
Article ID: Q166979
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Word for Windows NT, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to fax multiple copies of a document from Word, a single document is sent instead.

CAUSE

The Collate check box in the Print dialog box is not selected.

Typically, when a fax driver is selected, the Collate check box should be unavailable (dimmed). However, in some cases this check box is available. If the check box is available, it should be selected.

NOTE: This problem does not occur with Microsoft Windows NT Workstation version 4.0 SP 2. In this version of Windows NT, the check box behaves correctly. That is, the Collate check box is selected, and, when a fax driver is selected, the check box becomes unavailable.

WORKAROUND

To successfully fax multiple copies from Word, the Collate check box must be selected (most fax software can't fax multiple copies). To select this check box, use the following steps:

  1. On the File menu, click Print.

  2. In the Print dialog box, click the Collate check box to select it.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
