  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

If you open a Microsoft Word for the Macintosh document (versions 6.0 or 6.0.1) in Word 97, and then save the document in Word 6.0/95 format, any inline pictures in the document become a large red X containing the following message:

Use Word 6.0c or later to view Macintosh picture.

NOTE: This error message occurs when you reopen the document in Word 97.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, install Microsoft Word 97 Service Release 1 (SR- 1). The picture may not always appear, but it will print correctly.

To work around this problem, use any of the following methods:

  • After opening the document in Word 97, first save the document in Word 97 format, and then save the document in Word 6.0/95 format.

    -or-

  • Change the inline picture to a framed picture in Word for the Macintosh, before opening the document in Word 97.

    -or-

  • After opening the document in Word 97, save the document in Rich Text Format (RTF). Both Word 97 for Windows and Word 6.0 for the Macintosh can read this file format.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 97 SR-1.
