WD97: Inserting or Pasting over Selection Retains Hyperlink

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word 97, if you select a hyperlink and then paste or insert any of the following items over the selection, Word preserves the hyperlink although it does not preserve the hyperlink's blue underline:

  • Form Field
  • Field
  • Symbol
  • Date & Time
  • Page Number
  • Table of Contents
  • Index
  • Table of Authorities
  • Picture (if the Float Over Text check box is cleared)
  • Formula
  • File

Also, when you type over a selected hyperlink, Word preserves the hyperlink, along with its blue underline.

CAUSE

This functionality is by design of Word 97. When you insert, paste, or type over a selected hyperlink, Word preserves the hyperlink.

WORKAROUND

Removing the Hyperlink

To manually remove the hyperlink, follow these steps:

  1. Use the right mouse button to click (right-click) the item containing the hyperlink, point to Hyperlink on the shortcut menu, and then click Select Hyperlink.

    NOTE: If Hyperlink is not on the shortcut menu, then press F9 to display the hyperlink field code, and right-click the item again.

  2. Press CTRL+SHIFT+F9 to remove the hyperlink.

Showing the Hyperlink Underline

To retain the hyperlink and show it as a hyperlink:

  1. Right-click the item containing the hyperlink, point to Hyperlink on the shortcut menu, and then click Select Hyperlink.

  2. On the Format menu, click Style.

  3. Under List, click to select "All Styles."

  4. In the Styles list, click to select the Hyperlink style, and then click Apply.

MORE INFORMATION

Word does not preserve the hyperlink when you insert any of the following items over a selected hyperlink:

  • AutoText
  • Objects
  • Any item if the Float Over Text check box is selected
