The information in this article applies to:
SYMPTOMSIf you perform an administrative installation of the Word 97 import converter for Word 6.x and 7.x and then run the Setup.exe, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Word 97 Converter setup was not completed for the following reason: Setup could not determine a valid directory for the source files. This may be caused, in certain circumstances, by running from a network location with a long directory name, or from a read-only location. CAUSEThis problem occurs if you make the directory containing the expanded files from Wrd97cnv.exe read-only.
WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, use either of the following methods.
Method 1: Change the Share PermissionsThe converter will be installed correctly if the share permissions are set to include "Change" (RWXD).
Method 2: Change the File PermissionsRather then setting the share to read-only, you can set the individual file permissions in the share to read-only, leaving the share with "Change" permissions.
