WD6x: Find File Fails with Dates Beyond Year 1999

Last reviewed: March 3, 1998
Article ID: Q176119
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.1a

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to perform a search for a document in Microsoft Word using the Find File feature, the search will fail if you search for dates later than 12/31/1999.

CAUSE

Word uses a four-digit representation of the year to search for files. However, Word depends on the operating system to show it the full date. If the Show Century option is turned off, Word cannot find the document based on the four-digit year.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

  1. On the Apple menu, point to Control Panels, and then click Date & Time.

  2. Click Date Formats.

  3. Click to select the Show Century check box, and then click OK.

  4. Close the Date & Time dialog box.

  5. Start Word.

  6. On the File menu, click Open, and then click Find File.

  7. In the Search dialog box, click Advanced Search.

  8. Click to select the Timestamp tab.

  9. In the Last Saved or Created boxes, type in the date of the document you are trying to find in the following format

          MM/DD/YYYY

    where:

MM = Month DD = Day YYYY = Year (four digit)

For example, if you are searching for a file with a date of October 28,
2010, you would type in 10/28/2010 in the From/To boxes.

Or, to temporarily work around this problem, use the Find File tool that is part of the Macintosh operating system.
