The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you are working on a Word table in outline view, you may experience the following problems.

Case 1

You will be unable to demote the heading style of a table row to one greater than Heading 2.

Case 2

When you use the arrow icons (or keys) to demote or promote a table cell within one row, the entire row is formatted with the appropriate heading style.

CAUSE

These symptoms are a result of design limitations in outline view.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, apply the style manually. To do this, select the table row (or place the insertion point into the cell of the table) to which you want to apply a particular heading style and use either of the following methods:

  • On the Format menu, click Style. Under Styles, select the heading number style you want to use and then click Apply.

    -or-

  • Hold down the SHIFT key, click the Style box to show all styles and then click the style you want to use.

MORE INFORMATION

When you work on a table in outline view, the Show Heading buttons are not displayed for rows that have a heading style applied.
