SYMPTOMSWhen you open a Word 97 or Word 98 Macintosh Edition document in an earlier version of Word, if that document contains underlines, some of the underlines may be lost.
CAUSEThis problem occurs when the document was saved as any of the following file types:
WORKAROUNDNOTE: This workaround will not work when you open a Word 98 Macintosh Edition document in an earlier version of Word for Windows using the Word 97 converter. The underlines will be not be retained and you will have to reapply the underlines after opening the document. Do one of the following:

STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
MORE INFORMATIONIn Word 97 for Windows and Word 98 Macintosh Edition, there are some additional underlines available for underlining text. The additional underlines, which are not included in earlier versions of Word, include:
When you use the Word 97 or Word 97-98 Import converter to open your Word 97 for Windows or Word 98 Macintosh Edition document in an earlier version of Word, the underlines are converted to either a single or double underline.
