WD: Format Change Case May Not Change Case Based on Selection

SYMPTOMS

When you select Sentence Case in the Change Case dialog box, the case of the sentence remains the same. (To locate the Change Case dialog box, click Change Case on the Format Menu.)

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when either of the following conditions is true:

  • The text is formatted for toggle case when you choose Sentence Case.

    -or-

  • The selected text contains a mixture of words in uppercase and other cases.

WORKAROUND

To change toggle case to sentence case, first change the text to lowercase, then change the case to sentence case.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

There are two ways to change case within a document.

Method 1: Use the Change Case Command on the Format Menu

To change case using the menu, click Change Case on the Format menu. The Change Case dialog box includes the following options.

Sentence case:

   Capitalizes the first letter of the first word in the selected
   sentences.

lowercase:

   Changes all selected text to lowercase letters.

UPPERCASE:

   Changes all selected text to capital letters.

Title Case:

   Capitalizes the first letter of each word in the selection.

toGGLE cASE:

   Changes all uppercase letters to lowercase in the selection and vice
   versa.

Method 2: Use the Keyboard

To use the keyboard to change case, follow these steps:

  1. Select the words that you want to change to a different case.

  2. Press SHIFT+F3.

NOTE: Pressing the SHIFT+F3 key will toggle the case between the following cases:

   UPPERCASE
   lowercase
   Title Case
