The information in this article applies to:
SYMPTOMSWhen you type the word "wern't" (without quotation marks) and then press the SPACEBAR, the word is not automatically changed to "weren't."
CAUSEWern't is one of the predefined AutoCorrect entries provided with Microsoft Word. This problem does not occur with other entries in the AutoCorrect list that contain an apostrophe.
WORKAROUNDNOTE: Method 1 may not work for all instances of the AutoCorrect entry. If a curly apostrophe is not needed, then use Method 2.
Method 1: Turn on Smart Quotes
Method 2: Replace the AutoCorrect Entry
For more information about adding entries to the AutoCorrect list, click Contents And Index on the Help menu (or on the Balloon Help menu if you are using a version of the Macintosh operating system earlier than 8.0), click the Index button in Word Help, type the following text
AutoCorrect, creatingand then click Show Topics. Select the "AutoCorrect, creating and editing entries" topic, and click Go To. If you are unable to find the information you need, ask the Office Assistant.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
