Word: Page Numbers Are Sequential in Print Merge New Document

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word, when you perform a print merge to a new document, the page numbers for each record in the resulting merged document do not start at 1 for each of the individual merged record within the new document. The numbers are sequential throughout the entire merged document.

WORKAROUND

To ensure that the page numbers start at 1 for each of the merged documents within the larger merged document, do the following:

1. Select the entire main document (if you haven't yet performed the print merge) or the "Merge#" ("Form Letters" in 4.0 and 3.0x) document (if you have already completed the print merge) by pressing the keyboard combination COMMAND+A (COMMAND+OPTION+M in 4.0 and 3.0x).

2. On the Format menu, click Section.

3. Select the Restart At 1 option in the Page Number section of the dialog box that appears.

4. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition.

MORE INFORMATION

If the option Merge And Print Results (Print in Word 4.0 and 3.0x for the Macintosh) is selected instead of Merge And Save Results in New File (New Document in Word version 4.0 and 3.0x for the Macintosh) when you perform the print merge, each letter (section) will begin with page 1.
