Date Formats Customizable in Word Beginning with 5.0

Microsoft Word for the Macintosh versions 5.0 and later provide single elements of the date to create customized date formats. The date formats that are supplied with Word versions 3.0x and 4.0 were limited and could not be customized.

Microsoft Word versions 5.0 and later have a much wider variety of standard date formats in its Standard Glossary. In addition, Word version 5.0 also has single elements of the date, so date elements can be combined to create a custom date format.

For example, the international date format appears as "1 January 1992" instead of "January 1, 1992", the standard date format used in the U.S. The international date format does not appear in the Standard Glossary.

To create a new glossary item for the international date format, do the following:

1. From the Edit menu, choose Glossary.

2. Make sure Show Standard Entries is selected, select Print Day Of Month, and click the Insert button.

3. The day of the month should now be inserted in the document. Press the SPACEBAR to put a space character after the day.

4. From the Edit menu, choose Glossary.

5. Select Print Month Long and click the Insert button.

6. Press the SPACEBAR to put a space after the month.

7. From the Edit menu, choose Glossary.

8. Select Print Year Long and click the Insert button.

9. Select the international date just created in the document.

10. From the Edit menu, choose Glossary.

11. Type in a name for the new glossary item, such as "Print International Date" (without the quotation marks).

12. Click the Define button.
