WD: Deleting All Auto-Numbered Footnotes

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Word the Replace command or Change command in Word 4.0 and 3.x for the Macintosh can be used to remove all auto-numbered footnote reference marks as well as the footnote text for each.

To delete all automatic footnotes in a document, do the following for the appropriate version of Word.

Word 5.x (Macintosh), 6.x (Windows and Macintosh), 7.x (Windows)

  1. Position the insertion point at the beginning of your document.

  2. On the Edit menu, click Replace.
3. Click Special, and then select Footnote Mark.
 

  • Leave the Replace box empty.

  • Click Replace All.

    Word 4.0 for the Macintosh

    1. Position the insertion point at the beginning of your document.

    2. Click Change on the Utilities menu.

    3. Type "^5" (without quotation marks) in the Find What box (the caret [^] is produced by pressing SHIFT+6)}.

    4. Leave the Change To empty.

    5. Click Change All.

    Word 3.x for the Macintosh

    1. Position the insertion point at the beginning of your document.

    2. Click Change from the Search menu.

    3. Type "^5" (without quotation marks) in the Find What box (the caret [^] is produced by pressing SHIFT+6)}.

    4. Leave the Change To empty.

    5. Click Change.

    This procedure will only remove footnotes and footnote reference marks that are automatically numbered. All other footnotes must be removed manually.
