The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c

One of the following procedures can be used to create check boxes.

Word for Windows, 2.0 and Later

Method 1

  1. Select a standard TrueType font such as Arial, Times New Roman, or Courier New. (Some other nondecorative fonts will also work, but you will need to test each.)

  2. Type in the ANSI character code for a check box by pressing and holding down the ALT key and typing the proper number-pad keys in sequence. ANSI codes that will produce an empty check box are:

          ALT + 0141
          ALT + 0142
          ALT + 0143
          ALT + 0157

Method 2

  1. From the Insert menu, select Symbol.

  2. From the Symbols From list, select Wingdings.

  3. Select the appropriate box, and the chosen symbol will be inserted at the insertion point position in the document.

Method 3

  1. From the Insert menu, choose Frame.

  2. Click and drag your mouse pointer to create and size a blank frame. The border is automatically formatted for you.

  3. To change the border, select the frame and choose Border from the Format border.

Word for Windows 1.0, 1.0, or 1.1a

  1. From the Insert menu, choose Picture and select New Picture.

  2. Click the picture to select it.

  3. Make the box smaller by dragging the frame's sizing handles.

  4. The new graphic will have a single frame. To change the frame or to make the box thicker, choose Picture from the Format menu.

Rather than re-creating a check box each time you need it, you can create check boxes quickly by making the check box a glossary entry and pasting it into text.
